Two renovation projects in North Norfolk, a few years apart, by the same hand — and the shop that grew out of furnishing both of them. Here’s the story of each cottage.
Spinks Nest
A flint gardener’s cottage, made rustic-luxe
Spinks Nest began life as a workaday flint cottage for a country house gardener. Over more than two years, it was rebuilt piece by piece into a holiday let without losing that original character — the ancient flint walls are still there, along with lime-rendered plaster, reclaimed oak beams, reclaimed brick and Norfolk pamment floors.
What changed is everything layered on top: curated antiques and vintage finds sit next to Mulberry Home fabrics, Designers’ Guild bedlinen and a Woolroom wool mattress. It’s the kind of styling its own website calls ‘rustic luxe’ — worn-in materials made comfortable, not a cottage dressed up to look old.
It’s a small space built for two, dog-friendly, and five minutes’ drive from Holt. One guest called it “the most relaxing place to stay in North Norfolk.”
Riverbank
A newer project, beside a chalk stream
Riverbank is the newer of the two cottages, set in the village of Hunworth beside a rare chalk stream. The garden runs straight down to the water, and the whole place was designed around that spot: quiet, properly dark at night, and close enough to hear the stream from indoors.
Inside, it blends modern and traditional British design — richly textured fabrics and wallpaper, an open wood burner in an inglenook fireplace, and a cast-iron bath positioned to look straight out over the river and woodland.
Riverbank sleeps up to seven: four adults across two double bedrooms, plus three children in bunks. Guests regularly spot kingfishers, deer and red kites from the windows, and Hunworth’s footpaths — some of them mentioned in the Domesday Book — start right from the door.
